This bust depicts Lambert de Liverlo, the Chancellor to Bishop Maximilian Henry of Bavaria. He is turned backwards slightly, which highlights his imposing character and the presence of this significant figure.
This work was attributed to Jean Del Cour, the 17 century master of Baroque sculpture, in the great tradition of the creations of Bernin, before the professor emeritus Pierre Colman attributed it to Gérard-Léonard Hérard (1636–1675). He was a sculptor and medal carver of Liège origin, whose short career unfolded in Paris, mainly in Versailles, alongside another great name from Liège: Jean Varin.
